Central Outlasted In Battle With Rogers State

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team ran out of gas late in a spirted affair with Rogers State Saturday, falling to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association foe 70-65 at Hamilton Field House.

Central Oklahoma is now 7-11 on the season and 4-5 in league play.

"That was a tough loss," UCO head coach Bob Hoffman said. "We have a few of those. But the guys never quit fighting and that's a good sign. If the ball doesn't bounce our way, the guys are still giving it everything we have to the very end and I'm proud of that."

Central Oklahoma fought tooth and nail Saturday afternoon in a game that saw 16 lead changes. Unfortunately for UCO, when Rogers State took a lead with 14:07 to play, it didn't let go of it. The Bronchos biggest deficit was a mere seven points, 53-46, but as it chipped away and chipped away, it couldn't break through in the end.

UCO got within striking distance after an emphatic slam from Alex Ogunseye made it 60-58 with 4:13 to play. A pair of free-throws from Dashawn McDowell made it 62-60 with 2:02 to play. And a Camryn Givens jump shot from the midway point on the left side of the lane made it 64-62 with 41 seconds to play.

Central continued to push. Carson Calavan missed a 3-point attempt that would have given the Bronchos the lead with 28 seconds to play. After a pair of free-throws from Rogers State after that, Givens drove to the basket and made a layup as he was fouled. He sank the free-throw to make it 66-65.

Rogers again made its free-throws – the Hillcats went 11-for-13 on the day from the line – and left UCO with one more chance, down 68-65, to at least tie the game. But with four seconds left, Givens missed a contested 3-pointer from the wing. RSU added two final free-throws after that to take a 70-65 lead and a victory.

Givens led the Bronchos Saturday with 21 points, a game high, and 10 rebounds, also a game high. He was 6-for-10 from the floor, 1-for-3 from behind the arc, and 8-for-9 from the free-throw line. Ogunseye added 11 points and two rebounds and McDowell scored nine points to go with four boards.

The first half was no different, with nine lead changes in the first 20 minutes. UCO did pull ahead midway through the half and held that lead, taking a 35-34 advantage to the locker room.

Givens played a big part early, scoring nine first-half points. The sophomore forward was near unstoppable in the paint. He hit 4 of 6 shots in the first half, including one 3-pointer.

UCO used a rugged defense to force 10 turnovers, which helped spur 10 points off turnovers. And the Bronchos were a solid 58 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes, hitting 14 of 24 shots, 4 of 5 3-pointers, and added three free-throws.

Central Oklahoma will hit the road for a pair of MIAA games next week. The Bronchos take on Washburn at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Topeka, Kan. before visiting Emporia State next Sunday, Jan. 26, at 3:30 p.m.
