EDMOND (Jan. 17) – Cody Karstetter's dominating upset gave Central Oklahoma an early spark and the No. 6-ranked Bronchos went on to a 36-6 drubbing of Newman Friday night at Hamilton Field House.
Karstetter knocked off seventh-ranked Tyler Lawley 12-5 at 133 pounds as UCO jumped out to a 15-0 lead on its way to the easy win. The Bronchos improved to 7-1 in their first Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association dual.
Central won eight of the 10 matches, getting falls from 141 Nate Keim and heavyweight Garrett Beier while 174 Tre'Vaughn Craig, 184 Heath Gray and 197 Dalton Abney scored major decisions.
"Overall I thought it was a good performance for us," said head coach Todd Steidley, who picked up his 50th win (50-10) in his fourth year at the helm. "We were pretty aggressive and at the same time showed good patience."
Tanner Cole opened the dual with a forfeit at 125 pounds and Karstetter followed with his stunner.
Lawley broke a scoreless deadlock with an escape to start the second stanza, but Karstetter struck for two takedowns and a two-point near-fall the rest of the period to take a 6-2 lead. The senior added an escape, reverse and takedown in the final period and tacked on a riding time point to polish off the easy win.
Keim had a 8-1 lead before getting his second fall of the season at the 6:28 mark, while Beier notched his fifth pin late in the second period.
Craig had three takedowns in a 10-1 rout that started a string of three straight major decisions for the Bronchos. Gray racked up five takedowns in a 12-3 romp for his 20th straight win and Abney had more than four minutes riding time in cruising to an 8-0 shutout.
Ty Lucas had UCO's other win, prevailing 5-2 at 157. The fourth-ranked Lucas had two takedowns in that victory over 11th-rated Kameron Frame, getting the second of those with one second left in the second period.
The Bronchos are back home again Sunday, taking on Emmanuel at 2 p.m.
