Central Oklahoma Tops Pittsburg State

PITTSBURG, Kan. – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team used an 11-0 run in the second half to build a lead it wouldn't relinquish and the Bronchos beat Pittsburg State 78-73 Saturday afternoon in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.

Central Oklahoma improved to 7-9 on the season with the win. UCO is now 4-3 in league play.

Season-highs for newcomers Camryn Givens and Seth Hurd propelled the Bronchos to a win. Givens, a sophomore transfer, scored 20 points on 5-for-9 shooting and had a team-high 10 rebounds. He was 2-for-2 from behind the arc and 8-for-12 from the free-throw line. Hurd, a freshman, scored 14 points and added two rebounds.

Dashon Bell, Dashawn McDowell, and Colt Savage all scored 10 points. McDowell hit his only 3-point attempt on the afternoon and Savage hit 2 of 3 from outside.

Central Oklahoma shot a blistering 57.8 percent from the field, hitting 26 of 45 attempts on the day. The Bronchos made 7 of 11 from outside and 19 of 29 free-throw attempts.

UCO got out to an early lead in a game that went back and forth for the first five minutes. UCO led 5-3, then by a single point on two more occasions. A timely Pitt State 10-0 run in the middle of the first half allowed the hosts to take control, but UCO didn't waver.

Central continued to battle, tying the game on three different instances late in the first half. UCO tied the game, 35-35 before Pittsburg State hit one of two free-throws with three seconds left to take a one-point halftime lead, 36-35.

Givens led the Bronchos in the first half with nine points. UCO shot 14-for-25 from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, knocking down 5 of 8 3-pointers.

The teams continued the back and forth in the second half. Givens tied the game with a free-throw right out of the halftime break, then Central took the lead back on a Hurd layup. UCO led for most of the next five minutes, allowing Pittsburg State to take a quick, one-point lead. But McDowell answered that with a 3-pointer and put the Bronchos back on top.

Pittsburg State tied it again, 54-54, with just under 10 minutes to play, but the Bronchos had another answer with an 11-0 run. A layup from Givens put UCO back in front, 56-54, and started the rally. Savage knocked down a jump shot, Hurd made a layup, and Givens made a pair of free-throws. Justin Nimmer made one of two free-throws and McDowell added a layup to make it 65-54 with 5:56 to play.

Pittsburg State couldn't recover after that. UCO held on to its lead for the final six minutes and earned the road win and a weekend split after coming up short at Missouri Southern on Thursday night.

Nimmer added seven points to help the offensive charge and grabbed six rebounds, Carson Calavan chipped in five off the bench, and D.J. Basey added two.

Central Oklahoma returns home from its short, two-game road trip and will host Northeastern State on Wednesday at Hamilton Field House.
