Central Remains Unbeaten Following Sunday Draw

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma soccer team played Newman to a scoreless tie Sunday afternoon at Tom Thompson Field. The 15th-ranked Bronchos are now 4-0-2 in 2019, keeping their unbeaten streak alive to start the new season.

"We know we had our chances and we need to put those chances away," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "We're still growing as a team and we know the things that we need to work on and we'll keep working on that."

Kaitlyn Asher earned her second shutout of the season Sunday. The junior goalkeeper made two saves against a conservative Newman to give Central a chance to the very end. Asher is 2-0-2 in goal this season, and has her goals against average down to 0.90. She's allowed only one goal in her last 290 minutes played.

Central Oklahoma outshot Newman 17-9, including a 9-1 advantage in the first half. But Newman, which is now also 4-0-2 on the season and has yet to allow a goal in six games, found favorable bounces time after a time and made a few saves to keep UCO off the scoreboard.

Tayrn Kedzior led UCO Sunday. The sophomore defender, who stopped numerous attacks by Newman in their tracks, was also a key player on the offensive side of the ball. Kedzior took a game-high six shots. Three were on target and saved, and two more, she launched a pair of free kicks off the crossbar.

Brooke Moore managed three shots on the day. She went just right of the goal in the 31st minute, and then left of the goal in both the 45th and 54th minutes of competition.

Kelsie Eason also came close for the Bronchos. The junior, who entered the game with a team-high six goals on the season, fired her first shot in the ninth minute, but missed high. She took another shot in the 74th minute and it sailed about a foot high and to the left.

UCO has played to a tie twice this season, but just 32 times in school history. The Bronchos haven't played a scoreless tie since 2014.

Central Oklahoma Sunday opened a five-game homestand. The Bronchos will host Rogers State Friday in the final non-conference match of the season. UCO then hosts Northeastern State next Sunday in the first MIAA contest of the near year. The Bronchos also host Fort Hays State and Nebraska Kearney the following weekend to end the homestand.
