No. 15 UCO Rattles Riverhawks

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The University of Central Oklahoma soccer team used a burst of offense early in the second half to earn a 2-1 win over Northeastern State Friday night.

Central improved to 4-0-1 with the non-conference win over its Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival. The Bronchos, ranked 15th in the country and unbeaten in 2019, have now won four in a row after a season-opening draw.

"We responded well tonight," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "We got behind in the first half but we didn't let that dictate our second half. I'm proud of the team for coming out in the second half the way they did."

After trailing 1-0 in the first half, a 16th-minute goal by Northeastern the difference, UCO exploded out of the gate in the second half. Haley Post scored in less than one minute into the half off a pass from Kelsie Eason to tie the match. Then Taryn Kedzior, off a corner from Eason, scored in the 48th minute to give the Bronchos the lead.

Central's tough and physical defense handled it from there.

UCO outshot NSU 13-10, but both teams put seven shots on goal. Central junior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Asher had a solid outing in net, putting together six saves to get her second win of the season. UCO was also whistled for 23 fouls to Northeastern's eight.

The Bronchos return home after the win. UCO hosts Newman, new to the MIAA this season, in another non-conference game Sunday at 1 p.m. at Tom Thompson Field.
