Central Rallies For Win At SBU

BOLIVAR, Mo. - The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team beat Southwest Baptist 3-2 Saturday in the second game of a doubleheader at Dobson Field.

The Bronchos improved to 32-16 with the win and are now 21-11 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association standings. UCO clinched the No. 3 seed in the MIAA Tournament next week in Pittsburg, Kan. The Bronchos will wrap up the 2019 regular season Sunday against SBU with a 1 p.m. first pitch scheduled for the season finale.

"We had to battle in this one," UCO head coach John Martin said. "They didn't make it easy on us but I'm proud of the team for fighting till the end and coming away with the win. Another tip of the cap to our pitching staff for keeping us close enough to strike."

Central Oklahoma found itself down 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning Saturday. This after UCO only surrendered one run all game in a 6-1 win over SBU earlier in the day. That came in the bottom of the ninth. But the Bronchos held it close. SBU went up 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth.

Gabe Littlejim got the start for Central Oklahoma. He would finish with a no decision. Littlejim threw 6 1/3 innings, allowed eight hits and two runs. He did strike out three in the effort.

Landon Bond, who threw 1 1/3 innings of relief work, would go on to pick up the win after not allowing a hit in his outing.

Central Oklahoma scored all three of its runs in the top of the eighth inning.

Dru Barrier led off the inning with a walk, then Ryan Harrel followed with a single to center field to put two on with nobody out. TJ Black flied out to give SBU a pinch of momentum, but Brock Ruminer followed that with an RBI single to left center that scored Barrier.

SBU went to the bullpen after that. Then Ruminer stole second to put two runners in scoring position with one out.

Philip Scott was up next and he drew a walk. With that, a wild pitch on ball four allowed Harrel to score and tie the game, 2-2. With runners on the corners, Martin then turned to a double steal. Scott stole second and Ruminer stole home on the play to give UCO a 3-2 lead. Scott was out on the play but the work was done for Central.

Junior Obeso relieved Bond in the bottom of the eighth. Josh Rutland came on in the bottom of the ninth and struck out all three batters to earn his 10th save of the season and close the door on the Broncho victory.

Black led the way for the Bronchos, going 2-for-4 on the day with a pair of singles. Ruminer, Kyle Crowl, TK McWhertor, Barrier and Harrel all added one hit apiece for UCO.

Central Oklahoma and SBU will finish off the three-game MIAA series Sunday afternoon. It's the final game of the 2019 regular season. UCO will head to Pittsburg, Kan. next Thursday for the MIAA Tournament.
