Bronchos Fall In First Game Of Super Regional

EDMOND (May 16) – Top-ranked Central Oklahoma had no answer for No. 15 Augustana in the first game of the NCAA Division II Central Super Regional Thursday afternoon.

The Vikings got off to a fast start, withstood an early UCO uprising and coasted past the Bronchos 13-5 to take control of the best-of-three series. The two teams meet again at 4 p.m. Friday, with the "if necessary" game at 6:30 p.m.

"That obviously wasn't the start we were looking for," head coach Cody White said. "We just couldn't get 'em out. They're really good and put us on our heels early.

"But we haven't won 48 games by accident and I know our team will come out and battle tomorrow. It's not going to be easy by any stretch, but this group will be ready to go."

Augie (55-10) pounded out 16 hits in ending the game after five innings on the eight-run rule, with Maggie Kadrik going 4-for-4 with two home runs and six runs batted in to lead the way. It was the most hits and runs given up by the Bronchos (48-7) all season.

The game got off to an ominous start for UCO when the Vikings paraded 12 batters to the plate in the top of the first and seized early control by scoring six runs in a half-inning that took 23 minutes to complete.

Central answered back with four runs of their own in its first at bat to briefly get back in the game.

Bailey Thompson started a one-out rally with a single to center field and Halley Randolph walked before JoBi Heath blasted a run-scoring double to left-center field. It was a single-season school record 24th double for Heath, who already holds UCO's career doubles mark.

Carli Jones walked to keep things going, then Lexy Dobson flared an RBI single to right field. Casady Webb came through with a two-out, two-run bloop single to center field to pull the Bronchos within 6-4.

The Vikings came back with two more runs in the top of the second to go up 8-4, with UCO getting one back in their half of the inning when Randolph and Heath drew consecutive two-out walks and Jones ripped an RBI double to right-center.

That made it 8-5, but the Bronchos wouldn't score again. Augie scored once in the third and added four more in the fourth to go up 13-5 and UCO couldn't extend the game.

Thompson had two of Central's six hits in the contest.
