Bronchos Buck Muleriders In NCAA Tournament

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma tennis team cruised to victory in its return to the NCAA Tournament Tuesday, beating Southern Arkansas 4-0 in the NCAA Central Region I final at Broncho Courts.

Central Oklahoma improved to 19-4 with the win and punched its ticket to the national finals next week in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

"I'm so proud of this team," UCO head tennis coach Jaron Maestas said. "They came out fighting so hard today and that really set the tone. Everyone knew how hard the other was working and we just kept it going. It's a good start to the tournament and we need to carry this over to Florida next week."

Central Oklahoma, which beat SAU 4-0 earlier this year, cruised to a 1-0 lead Tuesday thanks to a dominant start in doubles play.

Adel-Byanu Abidullina and Nikki Boyar won 6-1 at No. 2 doubles and Paola Landin and Isabella Dunlap won 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. Kirtana Bhat and Sarah Van Eeckhoudt were up 5-3 as the Bronchos clinched to early point.

In singles play, the dominance continued. Boyar won easy at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-1, to give UCO a 2-0 lead in the match.

Then Dunlap won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 to put UCO within a point of clinching the match.

It was just moments later that Abidullina won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles to send UCO on in the national tournament.

Central Oklahoma will advance to Altamonte Springs for the Round of 16, which begins next Wedensday. UCO made it to the national quarterfinals last season – the farthest any Broncho team advanced in the postseason.
