UCO Falls In Round of 16

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The University of Central Oklahoma tennis team came up short in the NCAA National Championships Round of 16 Wednesday morning, falling to Azusa Pacific 4-1.

Central Oklahoma finishes the 2019 season 19-5. It's the second straight season UCO has made the Round of 16.

"I'm proud of this team for all they've done this season and I'm really proud of my seniors for all they've done for this program," UCO head tennis coach Jaron Maestas said. "We were a really young team this year, so we'll be back. Our goal doesn't change."

UCO grabbed a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles Wednesday, but came up short in both No. 2 and No. 3 spots and found itself in an early deficit.

Isabella Dunlap and Paola Landin won 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. The 16th-ranked team in the country improved to 19-11 overall this season with the win.

But Azusa won 6-4 at No. 2 and 6-4 at No. 3 to go up 1-0. The Cougars of Azusa, Calif. then jumped out to a bigger lead as singles play rolled around.

APU won 7-5, 6-1 at No. 5 to go up 2-0, then 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles to go up 3-0 and move to a point away from clinching the match.

Dunlap fought back for the Bronchos, taking a point at No. 2 singles. The freshman – who was named ITA Rookie of the Year prior to the tournament – won 6-4, 6-4 to make it 3-1. Dunlap wrapped up her remarkable season with 43 combined wins in singles (25) and doubles (19).

With UCO taking APU to a third-set at both No. 1 and No. 6, the Bronchos needed wins there, as well as another at No. 4. But a retirement at No. 6 by Sarah Van Eeckhoudt gave Azusa the point and a 4-1 lead in the match and a 4-1 victory over the Bronchos.
