Central Oklahoma Tops Emporia State

EMPORIA, Kan. - The University of Central Oklahoma tennis team ran its win streak to 11 matches Friday afternoon with a 5-2 rout of Emporia State in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.

Central Oklahoma, ranked No. 7 in the nation, is now 12-2 on the season and 6-0 in the MIAA. The Bronchos will play sixth-ranked Washburn Saturday at 10 a.m.

"This is a really big weekend for us, so it was good to see the team come out and be focused and ready to play today," UCO head tennis coach Jaron Maestas said. "We came out sharp and played doubles well and then that carried over into singles. That was a good win for us and now we need to focus on Saturday's matchup."

Central Oklahoma won all three doubles matches, securing the early point and the 1-0 lead. 

Isabella Dunlap and Paola Landin won 7-6 at No. 1 doubles and Adel-Byanu Abidullina and Nikki Boyar won 6-4 at No. 2 doubles to give Central the point. Sarah Van Eeckhoudt and Alix Williams won 6-4 at No. 3 doubles to make it a clean sweep.

Friday is the fifth-straight dual in which the Bronchos have won all three doubles matches.

Abidullina was quick to finish in singles play, winning 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. The freshman from Moscow, Russia, who is ranked 26th in the country, is now 10-3 on the season after winning her third straight match. She is also now 5-0 in MIAA competition.

Boyar was second done in singles play. The freshman from San Antonio, Texas, who is also nationally ranked at No. 60, won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4 singles to give Central Oklahoma a 3-0 lead in the dual. Boyar is also to 10 wins on the season, now 10-4, and is 5-1 in league matches.

Landin was one of two Bronchos to go three sets Friday, coming away with a win at No. 3 singles. Landin, a sophomore from Los Cabos, Mexico, is now 14-1 on the season and 6-0 in league play. She won 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 Friday to make it 4-0, UCO, clinching the match and the 11th-straight win for the Bronchos.

UCO also got a win at No. 2 singles, with Dunlap winning 6-3, 7-5 to make it 5-0 Bronchos.

Emporia closed the match with a pair of wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.

Central Oklahoma will now turn its attention to Washburn. The Bronchos and the Ichabods match up well. Both teams have three ranked singles players each, and feature a top-rated doubles team. First serve is set for 10 a.m. Saturday.
