Bronchos Win MIAA Championship

OKLAHOMA CITY - The University of Central Oklahoma tennis team claimed its first Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association championship Sunday with a 4-2 win over Southwest Baptist at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.

The Bronchos entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed and topped fourth-seeded SBU for the fourth consecutive meeting to claim the title. UCO joined the MIAA in 2012. The Bronchos made it to, but lost, the championship last season.

It wouldn't be the same outcome for the 2019 Bronchos.

Paola Landin used a 6-3 third-set win to clinch the match and incite a victorious celebration for the Bronchos.

"I'm so proud of this team," UCO head tennis coach Jaron Maestas said. "That was our goal last year and we came up short. We made it a point to watch that celebration last year and remember how that felt because we weren't going to lose this year. I think the team likes celebrating better."

Landin won 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 at No. 3 singles to clinch the match. The Bronchos won four out of five completed singles matches to get the win.

After dropping the doubles point for the second time in as many days, UCO responded in a big way Sunday.

Nikki Boyar was the first to finish in singles play, winning 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 to tie the match 1-1. Isabella Dunlap won at No. 2 6-1, 6-2 to give the Bronchos the lead. UCO didn't look back.

Sarah Van Eeckhoudt won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6 singles to make it 3-1. SBU gained a point back with a win at No. 4 singles, then Landin sealed the deal for the Bronchos at No. 3.

Bhat and Van Eeckhoudt won their doubles match 6-3.

Central Oklahoma now awaits the announcement of the NCAA Division II national tournament field. The Bronchos are 18-4 on the season following the win and expect to host the first two rounds of the tournament with the Central Regional in two weeks.
