Washburn Hands Bronchos First Home Loss

EDMOND (April 20) – No. 2-ranked Central Oklahoma suffered its first home loss of the season Saturday afternoon, dropping a 5-1 decision to Washburn in the first game of a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association doubleheader.

The Ichabods snapped a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning with four runs in ending the Bronchos' 20-game home winning streak.  UCO fell to 37-4 on the season and 19-2 in the league, while the defending conference champion Ichabods improved to 24-21 and 15-6 heading into the nightcap.

"We didn't do the things we needed to do and just didn't play well enough to win," head coach Cody White said.  "We'll make some adjustments and hopefully will play better."

Central managed just six hits in the contest, with speedster Bailey Thompson accounting for three of those with a single, double and triple.

UCO broke a scoreless deadlock in the third when Thompson ripped a triple to right field and scored on Halley Randolph's sacrifice fly to short left field.  It was Thompson's seventh triple, moving her into second place on the school's single-season list.

Washburn tied it in the fifth and the Bronchos missed a good chance to take the lead in the sixth after loading the bases with one out on singles by JoBi Heath and Lexy Dobson and a walk to Allie Eicher, but a ground out and pop-up ended the threat.

The Ichabods went in front in the top of the seventh, scoring the tie-breaking run on a fielder's choice when a throw home was barely too late and then clinching the win with a three-run home run.
