Bronchos Fall At MSU

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The University of Central Oklahoma tennis team fell short 4-3 in the 2019 regular season finale Thursday afternoon at Midwestern State.

The Bronchos finish the regular season 15-4 and now turn their attention to the postseason. Central Oklahoma will be the No. 2 seed in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association postseason tournament, which begins next Friday in Oklahoma City.

UCO dropped the doubles point Thursday. Isabella Dunlap and Paola Landin lost 6-1 at No. 1 doubles before Sarah Van Eeckhoudt and Kirtana Bhat lost 6-3 at No. 3. The teams did finish the match at No. 2 doubles, where Adel-Byanu Abidullina and Nikki Boyar were in a 5-5 tie.

Abidullina, ranked eighth in the country, got a point back for the Bronchos in a hurry as the dual moved to singles competition. The freshman won 7-5, 6-2 at No. 1 singles to tie the match, 1-1. It was her seventh consecutive win and her 11th win in her last 12 matches.

MSU went back ahead with a win at No. 6, 6-4, 6-1, taking a 2-1 lead in the match. And then went up 3-1 with a win at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 7-6. The Bronchos then rallied with a pair of wins to tie the match.

Landin won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 3, her team leading 19th win of the spring, and Dunlap won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2 singles to tie the match, 3-3.

However, in the only match that went three sets, Bhat lost 1-6, 6-3, 4-6 at No. 4 to give MSU the match.

Central Oklahoma will face Nebraska-Kearney next Friday at 9 a.m. in the MIAA Quarterfinals. The Bronchos are aiming to better their position from last year, when UCO made it to the championship match.
