UCO Opens MIAA Tourney With Win

OKLAHOMA CITY - The University of Central Oklahoma tennis team opened the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Championship Friday morning with a 4-1 win over Nebraska-Kearney in the quarterfinals at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.

UCO will play the winner of Northwest Missouri and Emporia State Saturday at 2 p.m.

"That's a good way to start the tournament," UCO head tennis coach Jaron Maestas said. "Our goal is to win it all and you have to take it one match at a time. We got the first one and now we'll go prepare for the next one."

Central Oklahoma jumped out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to a pair of quick wins in doubles play.

Adel-Byanu Abidullina and Nikki Boyar won 6-2 at No. 2 doubles just before Sarah Van Eeckhoudt and Kirtana Bhat won by the same score at No. 3 doubles to give Central a 1-0 lead in the match.

Boyar was the first to finish in singles play, winning 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 5 spot in the lineup to make it 2-0, UCO. Van Eeckhoudt made it 3-0 with a win at No. 6, 6-3, 6-1.

UNK won its only point at No. 4 singles before the Bronchos clinched.

Abidullina had match point twice, but she wouldn't be the one to clinch. At the same time, Paola Landin had match point at No. 3 and she won 6-2, 6-1 to make it 4-1, Bronchos.

UCO is now 16-4 on the season with the win. The Bronchos will play either Northwest Missouri or Emporia State on Saturday. UCO beat both of those teams in the regular season.
