UCO Crushes Riverhawks

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - The University of Central Oklahoma tennis team beat Northeastern State 6-1 Friday afternoon in a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association dual.

The Bronchos, ranked ninth in NCAA Division II, improved to 13-3 with the win and are now 7-1 in the MIAA.

"I'm so proud of our team for the win today," UCO head tennis coach Jaron Maestas said. "To go down to Northeastern after doubles makes you think, here we go again, but this team wasn't going to let that happen. They fought hard to not only win the dual, but win every singles match. That's a big deal."

Northeastern State, which had a lengthy win streak over the Bronchos, won two of three doubles matches to go up 1-0 in the match. Central got a win at No. 2 doubles, with Adel-Byanu Abidullina and Nikki Boyar earning a 6-2 win there. But a 6-1 loss at No. 1 and a 7-6 (10-8) loss at No. 3 left the Bronchos in an early deficit.

But UCO had other plans Friday.

Paola Landin cruised to a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles to tie the match before Boyar won 7-6, 6-3 at No. 5 to put the Bronchos ahead. They never looked back.

Sarah Van Eeckhoudt won 7-6, 7-5 at No. 6 singles to make it 3-1, then Isabella Dunlap won in a third-set default over eighth-ranked Mayra Jovic (5-7, 7-5, 0-2 def.) to make it 4-1. Kirtana Bhat added a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 win at No. 4 and Abidullina closed out the singles sweep with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles over 15th-ranked Tatjana Stoll to make it 6-1, UCO.

Central Oklahoma now returns home where it will honor a trio of seniors playing in their final matches as Bronchos. Bhat, who is 121-82 all-time at UCO, and teammate Alix Williams, who is 124-55 in her career, as well as Van Eeckhoudt, who is 70-33 in two years with the Bronchos, will all be honored following UCO's 1 p.m. Sunday match with Lindenwood at Broncho Courts.
