Central Oklahoma Fights Off Oklahoma Christian

OKLAHOMA CITY - The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team beat Oklahoma Christian 8-4 Wednesday night in a non-conference matchup at Dobson Field in Oklahoma City.

The Bronchos improved to 21-13 on the season with the win. The Bronchos have now alternated wins in their last seven games.

"We needed to fight tonight and it took us a little bit, but we showed that fight in the end and got the win," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "I'm proud of our team for that tonight. We need to take that and move forward."

UCO needed a comeback to do it Wednesday. Trailing 4-3 in the eighth, the Bronchos scored five runs over the final two innings - seven of their eight in the final three innings - to earn the win.

Landon Bond picked up a win in relief effort. He threw just one inning, between the seventh and the eighth and struck out one batter in that time.

Central Oklahoma took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. Philip Scott drew a one-out walk, and advanced to second a bit later on a wild pitch. He scored when Paul Kropf knocked a single up the middle.

OC answered back with one in the bottom of the fourth. Spencer Van Scoyoc, who relieved UCO starter Colton Croft, got two quick outs before hitting a batter. He walked the next three and OC tied the game, 1-1.

The Eagles put two more on the board in the bottom of the sixth to go up 3-1.

Croft threw two innings in the start, his sixth of the season. The redshirt freshman from Broken Arrow, Okla. allowed only one hit and one walk.

Van Scoyoc threw 1 2/3 innings, allowing the one run. He also only allowed one hit on the evening.

Brent Stephens came out of the bullpen to replace Van Scoyoc following OC's one run in the fourth. He got UCO out of the jam and went on to throw 1 1/3, allowing just one hit and a walk in his outing.

Kace Massner got UCO within a run in the top of the seventh inning. The sophomore outfielder led off with a walk, and moved up to second when Taylor Avila walked after that. Joe Mondragon laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over. Then Carson Green added a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Massner and made it 3-2. TJ Black followed Green with an RBI single through the right side that scored Avila and tied the game.

OC responded though, again, in the bottom in the seventh. A leadoff single by OC, the Eagles scored with two outs when Oklahoma Christian reached on an error by Black. That made it 4-3.

Then the Bronchos took their turn with the responding.

Kyle Crowl led off with a single. He would score when Kropf smashed a hard hit ball to left field. The OC outfielder couldn't make a play and booted the ball. Crowl rounded the bases and scored with ease to tie the game, 4-4.

Moments later. Avila turned on a 3-2 pitch and blasted a shot down the left field line. It hit the foul pole for a two-run home run that gave UCO a 6-4 lead.

UCO added two more in the ninth. Black led off with a single. Brock Ruminer, who came on as a pinch-hitter two innings earlier, laid down a sacrifice bunt that he reached on as OC went to second on the play. OC's throw though went into centerfield and left runners on the corners for Scott, who then belted a double to left field to score both Black and Ruminer and make it 8-4, UCO.

Junior Obeso came on with two outs in the bottom of the eighth and after a leadoff walk, got a fielder's choice to get out of the inning. Josh Rutland then threw the ninth to close the door on the win.

Black went 3-for-4 with three singles on the night. He scored one run and had one RBI and one stolen base. Kropf went 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Avila, who was 1-for-3, had the only extra base hit of the day for the Bronchos with the late home run.

Central Oklahoma jumps right back into action this week. The Bronchos visit Northeastern State in Tahlequah, Okla. for a three-game Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association series beginning Thursday at 2 p.m.
