No. 7 UCO Wins 10th Straight

EDMOND - The University of Central Oklahoma tennis team beat Northwest Missouri 5-2 Sunday to improve to 11-2 on the season. 

It's the 10th-straight win for the Bronchos. UCO is also now 5-0 in league play.

"That was a big battle today and I am so proud of all of our girls," UCO head tennis coach Jaron Maestas said. "We had to fight for this one with some of the matches going three sets. That was a big win and I'm really proud of them."

Central Oklahoma is ranked seventh in the nation in the latest ITA poll. Northwest is ranked 19th.

Isabella Dunlap and Paola Landin were the first to finish in doubles play, earning a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles. The 16th-ranked duo was won its last four matches and is now 3-1 in the MIAA. 

Adel-Byanu Abidullina and Nikki Boyar followed that with a doubles-point clinching 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot in the lineup. Sarah Van Eeckhoudt and Alix Williams won 6-4 at No. 3 to make it a fifth-straight clean sweep in doubles play for the Bronchos.

Abidullina was the first one done in singles play, cruising to a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1 to give UCO a 2-0 lead in the match. Landin wasn't far behind, winning 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 singles to make it 3-0 Central Oklahoma.

Northwest got its first point of the match with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles. But Central Oklahoma clinched the match shortly after that.

Jessica Le won 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 at No. 6 singles to earn the Bronchos their fourth point of the match and clinched Central's 10th consecutive win.

Boyar added a three-set win of her own at No. 4 singles, coming from down a set for the win. The freshman won 6-7, 6-2, 7-6. Northwest grabbed one last point in the final match of the day at No. 5 singles, 7-6, 7-6.

Central Oklahoma will hit the road for MIAA play next week. The Bronchos play at Emporia State next Friday before taking on Washburn next Saturday.
