Bronchos Beat Missouri Western

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team beat Missouri Western 5-1 Sunday afternoon in the second game of the three-game Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association series.

Central Oklahoma is now 18-10 on the season and 11-6 in the MIAA. Missouri Western is 12-13 overall and 9-8 in league play. Game 3 of the series is scheduled for Monday at noon.

"Today's win was a good performance all around for us and we needed that," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We got a good start on the mound and a solid outing from our guys in the bullpen. We hit the ball well and moved the guys around the bases."

Brock Ruminer drew a one-out walk in the top of the first inning and later stole second as Philip Scott stood at the plate. Scott looked at a ball before looking at a strike. He had the MWSU pitcher pinned after that and smacked the third pitch he saw over the fence down the left field line.

It was the second home run of the season for Scott – both have come in the first inning – and this one put UCO ahead 2-0.

Brayden Nelson made the start for the Bronchos. It was the first of the year for the junior from Piedmont, Okla. Nelson would strike out three over five innings of work. He allowed five hits and just one walk in picking up the win. He is now 2-0 on the season.

Missouri Western scored its run via a solo home run in the bottom of the third.

Landon Bond came on in relief of Nelson in the bottom of the sixth and threw two quality innings for the Bronchos. Bond also struck out three batters. Junior Obeso came on in the eighth and after allowing a leadoff single, struck out two to keep Central ahead 2-1 heading to the final frame.

UCO added a pair of runs in the ninth. Brock Schaffer led off with a single through the right side before Paul Kropf smacked an RBI double to left center to make it 3-1, Bronchos. Dru Barrier then laid down a sacrifice bunt to get Kropf to third. TJ Black managed a single after that to score Kropf and make it 4-1.

Kyle Crowl followed Black with a single of his own. Then Ruminer reached on an error by the MWSU second baseman that allowed Black to score from second on the play. That made it 5-1, UCO.

Scott added another single after that for the 10th hit of the day for Central Oklahoma before Western finally got out of the inning with a double play.

Josh Rutland came on in the ninth and although he hit the first batter he faced, a double play followed by a strikeout closed the door on the win for the Bronchos.

Scott's 2-for-5 day, with two RBIs and the home run, led the Broncho offense. TK McWhertor was also 2-for-5 on the day. Schaffer went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Kropf, who was 1-for-4 Sunday, had a double to join Scott with the only extra base hits for the Bronchos.

Central Oklahoma and Missouri Western will wrap up the three-game MIAA series Monday. First pitch is scheduled for noon at Griffon Baseball Field.
