UCO Comeback Falls Short

EDMOND - A three-run bottom of the ninth was one run too short Tuesday night as the University of Central Oklahoma baseball team dropped a 9-8 non-conference decision against Southeastern Oklahoma State at Wendell Simmons Field.

Philip Scott hit a one-out single to left field before Paul Kropf followed with his team-leading sixth home run of the season to bring the Bronchos within two runs. After SOSU got the second out of the inning, Kace Massner launched a pinch-hit two-out solo home run down the right field line to make it 9-8.

Unfortunately for the Bronchos, Brock Ruminer struck out on the next at bat and the Broncho comeback fell short.

Central Oklahoma is now 13-9 on the season following what is the third-straight loss for the Bronchos. UCO has two three-game skids this season. The Bronchos responded to the first losing streak with a four-game win streak. UCO will return to the diamond Friday against Pittsburg State to begin a three-game Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association home series.

UCO scattered six hits Tuesday. Scott led the way with two. He had a double in the bottom of the third that scored Kyle Crowl before singling in the ninth. Scott was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Scott's double was his ninth of the season, the most of any Broncho through 22 games.

Crowl also went 2-for-4. He homered to leadoff the bottom of the first, knocking his fourth of the season over the flag pole in center field.

Joe Mondragon had one hit Tuesday, his first in a Broncho uniform. The junior singled to right field to advance TK McWhertor over to third base. On the following at bat, Mondragon executed a delayed steal to bait the SOSU defense into a run down while McWhertor scored. That play, in the bottom of the fourth, made it 8-3 Southeastern.

McWhertor reached on an error by the SOSU shortstop in the sixth inning. Brock Ruminer was on first after a fielder's choice and he would score on the play. The Southeastern first baseman also had an error throwing to second to try and get the advancing McWhertor. Crit Williams came on as a the DH in place of Mondragon in the sixth and scored McWhertor with an RBI groundout to make it 8-5.

Southeastern added one more run in response of that Broncho rally to make it 9-5 before the Bronchos gave it one more push in the ninth.

Colton Croft took the loss for the Bronchos Tuesday. The redshirt freshman lasted only 1 1/3 innings before UCO head coach John Martin went to his bullpen. Croft struck out one, but allowed four hits, five runs, and a walk.

Landon Bond came in out of the pen first, but he had a similar tough outing. Bond threw two innings, allowed four hits, three runs, and three walks while striking out two. Brayden Nelson, Junior Obeso, and Josh Rutland also made appearances Tuesday. Obeso (two) and Rutland (three) aided in Central's eight strikeouts.

Central Oklahoma is scheduled to play host to Pittsburg State at 6 p.m. Friday at Wendell Simmons Field. The teams will also play 3 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
