No. 11 UCO Tops St. Edward's

ARLINGTON, Texas - The University of Central Oklahoma tennis team beat St. Edward's 4-3 Sunday afternoon in a neutral-site non-conference matchup. The Bronchos, ranked 11th in the country, improved to 6-2 on the season with the win.

"We needed some younger players to step up today and we got that," UCO head tennis coach Jaron Maestas said. "I'm really proud of the team and I'm really proud of the young players for stepping up."

Adel-Byanu Abidullina and Nikki Boyar, a freshmen duo, cruised to a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles before Sarah Van Eeckhoudt and Alix Williams teamed up for a 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles to help UCO out to an early 1-0 lead in the match.

Abidullina, who earlier in the week knocked off the 11th-ranked player in the country, kept it on cruise control as play shifted to singles matches. The freshman from Moscow won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles to make it 2-0, UCO.

Boyar dropped her singles match at No. 4, allowing St. Edward's its first point on the scoreboard, but Isabella Dunlap, also a freshman and the No. 2 rated player in the country, won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles to give UCO a 3-1 lead in the match.

Then Jessica Le, UCO's fourth freshman in its six-person lineup, won 7-6, 6-2 at No. 6 to clinch the match for the Bronchos. Sunday is the fifth-straight win for UCO.

SEU won at No. 5 and No. 2 to get its other two points after the match was already in the bag for the Bronchos.

Central Oklahoma will hit the road for a pair of Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association duals next weekend. The Bronchos take on Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday and Fort Hays State on Sunday.
