No. 4 UCO Cruises In League Play

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. – The fourth-ranked University of Central Oklahoma tennis team cruised to a 7-0 win over Nebraska-Kearney in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action Saturday afternoon.

The Bronchos improved to 7-2 on the season with the win and are now 2-0 in the MIAA.

"This league has a lot of talent and it's really hard to go win on the road," UCO head tennis coach Jaron Maestas said. "For us to come out and play that way against a good Kearney team, that says a lot. We're fighting for every point and that's what I like to see out of this team."

UCO jumped out to a 1-0 lead Saturday thanks to wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.

Isabella Dunlap and Paola Landin, ranked as the ninth-best doubles team in the country, won 6-2 at No. 1. Kirtana Bhat and Adel-Byanu Abidullina won 6-0 at No. 2 to clinch the doubles point for UCO.

UNK won its only match of the day at No. 3 doubles, 6-4, over Sarah Van Eeckhoudt and Nikki Boyar.

The Bronchos continued its winning ways in singles play.

Abidullina won 7-5, 6-4 over 38th-ranked Vasilisa Polunova at No. 1 singles. Abidullina is ranked 30th herself and outworked the like-paired foe. Both are nationally-ranked freshmen from Russia.

Dunlap then won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 and Landin won 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 at No. 3.

Bhat won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4, Boyar, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5, and Van Eeckhoudt, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 6 to make it a clean sweep for the Bronchos.

UCO has won five straight against Kearney dating back to 2016. Maestas is 5-0 against the Lopers.

Central pushed its win streak to six matches with the win. It is set to continue MIAA play Sunday afternoon against Fort Hays State in Hays, Kan.
