Bronchos Downed By Emporia State

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma baseball team dropped a 10-1 decision to Emporia State Saturday afternoon in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play at Wendell Simmons Field.

The Bronchos are now 13-7 on the season and 6-5 in league play. Emporia State is 10-8 overall and 7-4 in the MIAA. The teams have each won a game in the series. Game 3 is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.

"We just didn't play well in any aspect of the game today and that's disappointing," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We still had our chances, but we didn't come through when we needed to. We need to focus and lock in tomorrow and try to win the series."

Central Oklahoma fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first inning Saturday, with ESU scoring both runs while not recording a single hit.

The Bronchos got one back in the bottom half of the first, their only run of the day. Brock Ruminer led off with a double down the left field line and scored when Philip Scott smacked an RBI single to right center. That made it 2-1, Emporia, but the Bronchos wouldn't get another hit until the seventh inning and that was the only other hit of the game for UCO.

Spencer Van Scoyoc took the loss, throwing just 2 2/3 innings on the mound. He allowed three runs on two hits and issued six walks.

Colton Croft threw three innings of relief work and kept ESU off the scoreboard, allowing just one hit while on the bump. Landon Bond then came in for 2 2/3, but allowed two runs on two hits. Ty Medina threw 2/3 of an inning, allowing Emporia's biggest rally of the day. The Hornets managed five runs on three hits off Medina.

The Bronchos did find a way to strikeout 16 ESU hitters Saturday and have struck out 33 in the first two games of the series. UCO has struck out 212 in 20 games this season, an average of 10.6 per game.

Central Oklahoma and Emporia State will wrap up its three-game MIAA series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
