Bronchos Whip Bearcats In Top 25 MIAA Showdown

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma beat Southwest Baptist 5-2 Friday afternoon in a top-25 showdown in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play at Broncho Courts.

UCO is ranked No. 11 in the country and is now 5-2 on the season. SBU is ranked 18th in the nation.

"We played well today," UCO head tennis coach Jaron Maestas said. "We got some big wins against ranked competition and that's going to help us. SBU has always been a good team and it's great to see our girls out there fighting to get the win."

Adel-Byanu Abidullina and Paola Landin both knocked down ranked opponents in the win. Byanu won 6-1, 7-5 at No. 1 singles over the 11th-ranked singles player in the nation, Jill Van Den Dungen. Landin knocked off 23rd-ranked Klara Vickov 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.

"Those wins are big for us," Maestas said. "For Adel and Paola to step up and beat their two best players, that's a big win for each of them and for the team."

UCO was up 1-0 heading to singles play.

Abidullina led the Bronchos to a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles alongside teammate Kirtana Bhat, helping UCO clinch the doubles point and take the early lead. Sarah Van Eeckhoudt and Nikki Boyar also won in doubles competition, 6-1, to help the Bronchos.

Van Eeckhoudt was the first doubles match done at No. 3. She was also the first singles match done at No. 6. The Overijse, Belgium native won 6-0, 6-0 to give the Bronchos a 2-0 lead in the match.

SBU earned their first point with a win at No. 2 singles to make it 2-1, but Abidullina's quick work of Dungen made it 3-1 UCO. Landin would then clinch the match for the Bronchos with her win at No. 3.

Central Oklahoma will make a quick trip to Arlington, Texas to take on St. Edward's Sunday at 2 p.m. That match is a makeup date after the team's original match was postponed due to weather last month.

UCO, now 1-0 in the MIAA, will return to league action next weekend with a trip to Nebraska Kearney and Fort Hays State.
