Bronchos Dismiss Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The University of Central Oklahoma women's tennis team beat Angelo State 4-1 Friday in the first of two non-conference games at ASU this weekend.

The 11th-ranked Bronchos cruised to a win Friday. Central will take on St. Edward's at Angelo State on Saturday.

"We played very well at doubles and it's good to see the team do that," UCO head tennis coach Jaron Maestas said. "Angelo is a good team and I think this was a pretty good win for us. We need to keep up that intensity for the rest of the weekend."

Paola Landin and Isabella Dunlap, ranked 11th in the country in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Doubles rankings, beat ASU's top doubles team 6-3 to get the winning started for the Bronchos on Friday. The pair is now 4-1 this spring.

Adel-Byanu Abidullina and Kirtana Bhat also cruised to a 6-3 win at No. 2 to clinch the doubles point for the Bronchos. Sarah Van Eeckhoudt and Nikki Boyar won 7-5 at No. 3 to make it a clean sweep for UCO.

In singles play, the Bronchos let Angelo even the match with a win at No. 1. Abidullina lost 6-3, 7-5 there and it was 1-1.

But wins by Boyar at No. 5 (7-6, 6-4) and Van Eeckhoudt at No. 6 (6-3, 6-2) put UCO in top shape to win the match and give the Bronchos a 3-1 lead.

Landin's 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles finished the job.

Central Oklahoma is 4-2 on the season after the win. The Bronchos will take on 5-1 St. Edward's at 11 a.m. Saturday before returning to Edmond.
