Central Defeats NSU

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - The University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball team beat Northeastern State 73-66 Saturday afternoon in a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association game at the NSU Event Center.

Micayla Haynes led all scorers with 19 points on a 8-for-12 shooting night. Blake Blessington added 13 points and Megan Hartness scored 12 to give UCO a trio of double-digit scorers.

"We shot the ball pretty well, better than we usually do at this place, so that gave us a big boost early on," UCO head women's basketball coach Guy Hardaker said. "And we still had to fight for it in the end and the girls did a good job of making sure we could get out of here with a win."

UCO jumped out to a big lead early. Ireon Smith hit a 3-pointer for the game's first basket, and Haynes hit the first of three on the day from behind the arc to make it 6-0, UCO. Haynes had a jumper, a layup, and another jumper in the next couple of minutes and UCO led 12-3 ahead of the first quarter media timeout.

The Bronchos kept that pace up and led 26-17 at the end of the first 10 minutes.

Northeastern responded though with a big second quarter and took the lead for the first time in the game with 1:19 to play before halftime. NSU outscored the Bronchos 22-8 in the quarter to go up 39-34 at the break.

Central's defense came out in the third quarter in a much tougher. UCO shot 41 percent in the quarter, almost 10 points lower than the total for the game, but the Broncho defense forced NSU to shoot a lowly 31 percent, including an 0-for-3 mark from behind the arc, and allowed just 10 points in the quarter to take back the lead and go up 50-49 heading into the final frame.

UCO then shot nearly 60 percent in the fourth quarter, making 7 of 12 shots including 3 of 6 from 3-point range. The Bronchos also got 6-for-9 free-throws to close out the deal and get the win.

Central shot an even 50 percent on the day, making 26 of 52 shots overall. UCO hit 11 of 24 threes and made 10 of 19 free-throws.

Smith chipped in nine points on the night and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. McKenna Pulley also scored nine points for UCO off the bench.

Central Oklahoma has two more road games on a three-game trip. The Bronchos play at Emporia State on Thursday, Feb. 14 and at Washburn on Saturday, Feb. 16 before returning home for the final four games of the regular season.
