UCO Falls At Emporia State

EMPORIA, Kan. - The University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball team dropped a 71-64 road contest to Emporia State Thursday night.

Central Oklahoma is 15-9 on the season following the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association matchup. The Bronchos are now 6-8 in the league.

"We got off to a good start, but I don't think we played well enough for the entire game," UCO  head coach Guy Hardaker said. "We needed to play really well for all 40 minutes, and that's hard to do, and we didn't do that tonight. Emporia is a good team. But now it's on to the next one."

Madison Lee started the scoring Thursday night with a 3-pointer, and Blake Blessington followed with one of her own after a pair of Ireon Smith free-throws.

ESU stormed back with eight-straight points of its own to tie the game before Smith put in a layup and then Shatoya Bryson got in on the 3-point shooting with her first basket to make it 13-8, UCO. The Bronchos led 16-14 after the first quarter.

Emporia then made its run, a 7-0 rally, to start the second quarter and take its first lead of the game. The Bronchos shot 5-for-11 in the first quarter from the floor with three 3-pointers. UCO would shoot just 5-for-19 in the second quarter with a pair of threes as it fought to stick with a settled in ESU squad.

UCO made a 7-2 run in the middle of the quarter to gain the lead back once again, 28-27, before ESU took its turn, closing the final four minutes of the half on an 8-2 run, including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to make it 35-30 heading to the break.

The deficit grew for the Bronchos in the third quarter. Emporia scored the first six points of the quarter to go ahead 41-30. After the Bronchos got on the board, ESU hit back-to-back threes to go up by 15 points, 47-32. They would lead by as many as 17 before the quarter ended.

Central Oklahoma did all it could to chip away in the fourth quarter, outscoring Emporia State 22-17 in the final 10 minutes.
