Central Comes Up Short At New Mexico State

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of Central Oklahoma tennis team dropped a close 4-3 decision at New Mexico State Friday.

The Bronchos fell behind 1-0 after allowing NMSU to take the doubles point, then after trailing 3-1 in the match during singles play, 11th-ranked Central Oklahoma rallied back to tie the match 3-all with only No. 3 singles left on the court.

UCO was ahead by a set in the match, but ultimately couldn't get the win. The match is recorded as an exhibition with the Division I foe, and alma mater of UCO head tennis coach Jaron Maestas.

"We fought hard today," Maestas said. "It was really fun to bring the team here and to play against my former school. They are a very good team and a conference contenders almost every year. We battled with them and I think that's going to help us down the road."

Central Oklahoma will play another DI school Saturday, visiting UTEP in El Paso, Texas before returning to Las Cruces to face Western New Mexico for the third match in as many days on Sunday afternoon.

Adel Abidullina and Kirtana Bhat scratched out a 7-6 win at No. 2 doubles Friday morning. As the match rolled into the afternoon, Abidullina cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles to put UCO on the scoreboard down 2-1.
