UCO Downed In Topeka

TOPEKA, Kan. - The University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball team dropped a 74-53 MIAA road game Saturday afternoon to Washburn at Lee Arena.

The Bronchos are now 15-10 on the season following the loss and are 6-9 in the MIAA.

"We dug ourselves in a pretty big hole in that first quarter and that was just too much to get out of," UCO head women's basketball coach Guy Hardaker said. "We played pretty well in the second and third quarter trying to get back in the game, but couldn't finish it today."

UCO found itself down 21-6 after one quarter of play. The Bronchos got all six first quarter points from backup freshman point guard Brooke Rayner. She would end up being the leading scorer on the day for Central, finishing with nine points.

Saturday is the first time this season that no Broncho player scored in double figures.

Central Oklahoma came out slow, making just 2 of 11 first-quarter shots. UCO was 1-for-7 from behind the arc and went 1-for-2 at the free-throw line. All of that was from Rayner, who was 2-for-3 from the floor with a layup, a 3-pointer, and one free-throw made.

UCO made a better run in the second quarter, outscoring Washburn 17-16 in the frame. The Bronchos shot better to get there, making 5 of 12 shots in the quarter, including a 2-for-4 mark from behind the 3-point line. Central Oklahoma also made 5 of 8 free-throws.

Washburn held steady though after the big first quarter and led 37-23 at halftime.

Central again made a push in the third quarter, outscoring Washburn 20-12 thanks to its best quarter shooting the ball. The Bronchos were 7 of 10 from the floor, with McKenna Pulley sinking the only 3-pointer attempt for UCO in the frame. UCO also made five free-throws in the third quarter as it cut into Washburn's lead.

The Ichabods led 49-43 after three, the closest the game had been since it was 6-0 with 7:42 to play in the first quarter.

Washburn though would put an end to Central's rally and pull away. The fourth quarter resembled the first, with UCO getting outscored 25-10 in the final 10 minutes.

Rayner was Central's leading scorer. The freshman's season-high nine points on 2 of 3 shooting. Micayla Haynes and Shatoya Bryson each had eight points for UCO. Blake Blessington added seven.

The Bronchos finished the afternoon shooting just 36.4 percent on 16 of 44 from the field.

Central Oklahoma is at home for the remainder of the regular season. UCO hosts Fort Hays State next Thursday at Hamilton Field House. The Bronchos also host Nebraska Kearney, Northeastern State, and Emporia State to wrap up the regular season.
