UCO Drops MIAA Matchup With Fort Hays

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball team lost 70-48 to fourth-ranked Fort Hays State Thursday night at Hamilton Field House in a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association contest.

Central Oklahoma is 15-11 on the season after the loss and now 6-10 in league play.

"I think we came out with a lot of fight, but at the end of the day, Hays is just a really good team," UCO head women's basketball coach Guy Hardaker said. "You have to play so well for every minute of the game against them, and when we stalled out a little bit, they just kept going. We got too far behind in the second quarter."

Micayla Haynes led UCO with 13 points in the game, making 3 of 7 shots from deep. Shatoya Bryson chipped in 11 points.

UCO fought tooth and nail with Fort Hays in the first quarter. Hays scored the game's first basket and led by as many as five, 7-2. But Bryson and Haynes kept UCO in it, tying the game 7-7 on a Haynes 3-pointer with 4:33 to go in the opening quarter. The game would be tied three times in the first 10 minutes, including 14-14 after Brooke Rayner hit a corner 3-pointer with 27 seconds left.

UCO then took its only lead of the game to open the second quarter, 16-14, when Bryson made a layup on the quarters' opening possession. Hays tied the game on the next possession and then went on a 7-0 run to go up 21-16. The Tigers would lead by as many as nine points in the quarter, 32-23, which was the score heading into halftime.

FHSU and UCO opened the third quarter alternating 3-pointers, with Kaci Richardson's shot making it a nine-point game, 25-26. Madison Lee then ended a 5-0 run from Hays with a 3-pointer of her own with 6:45 to play in the quarter that cut the lead to 13, 42-29. But Hays responded again with a run and led by as many as 19 points, 53-34, with 2:39 to play.

UCO answered in the final minutes with an 8-0 run though that cut the lead to 11, 53-42, at the end of the quarter.

Central carried that momentum into the fourth quarter, holding Hays without a point for the first three and a half minutes. Ireon Smith cut the lead to nine with a layup, and Bryson made it a seven-point game, 53-46, with 6:48 to play.

But Hays would be too much in the end. The Tigers closed out the game on a 17-2 run, with Central's final basket coming at the 5:03 mark in the fourth quarter.

Blake Blessington added eight points for the Bronchos and made a pair of 3-pointers. Smith had six points off the bench and added six rebounds and five blocked shots. Lee, Richardson, and Rayner, all finished with three points, while Megan Hartness scored one.

UCO shot 31.7 percent from the floor, making 19 of 60 shots on the night.  The Bronchos hit 9 of 31 threes on the night, 29 percent, and made one of the two free-throws they took.

Central Oklahoma returns to action this weekend, hosting Nebraska Kearney at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.
