Central Outlasts Cowley

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma tennis team dispatched Cowley County (Kan.) Friday afternoon at the Oak Tree Tennis Center in a 6-1 decision for the ninth-ranked Bronchos.
 
UCO won the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 as Central's top doubles team went unfinished. The Bronchos then captured wins at 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 to cruise to victory.
 
"It was a good day for us," UCO head tennis coach Jaron Maestas said. "We are grateful to be able to move indoors so we can get the match in. We'll take our lessons from this match and move forward as we try to continue to grow as a team."
 
Nikki Boyar and Sarah Van Eeckhoudt won 6-2 at No. 2 doubles before Alix Williams and Jessica Le won 6-4 at the No. 3 spot to give the Bronchos an early 1-0 lead in the dual match.
 
In singles play, Kirtana Bhat efforted a 7-5, 6-4 win at the top spot for the Bronchos, Paola Landin cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles, and Boyar won 6-2, 6-7, 10-5 at No. 3.
 
Williams won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 and Le won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 6 to round out the Broncho victories. Van Eeckhoudt fell behind after a 6-4 loss in the first set at No. 4, but battled back to force a third set with a 6-1 win before falling in that final set 10-5.
 
UCO is back on the road next week, traveling to New Mexico State on Friday, Feb. 22 before visiting Texas El-Paso on Saturday, Feb. 23.
 
The Bronchos won't play another home match until Friday, March 14.
