UCO Opens 2019 With Win At Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Central Oklahoma tennis team opened the 2019 season Saturday with a 4-3 win over Tampa in a non-conference dual at the Naimoli and Young Family Tennis Complex.

Central Oklahoma, ranked No. 9 in the nation, earned the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3, before taking three singles matches to clinch the win.

"Not bad for our first match," UCO head tennis coach Jaron Maestas said. "We'd be worried if everything was perfect on day one. We have a young team that needs to grow into their identity. But, this team really fought hard on every line. It was a good start."

Isabella Dunlap and Paola Landin won 6-4 at No. 1 doubles. The duo is ranked No. 11 in the country. Sarah Van Eeckhoudt and Nikki Boyar also won their doubles match, 6-4, at the No. 3 spot. Tampa avoided a sweep in doubles play with a 6-3 win over Kirtana Bhat and Adel Byanu.

Dunlap, the second-ranked singles player in the country, dropped a 6-4, 7-5 decision at No. 2 singles, but her Broncho teammates had her back.

Byanu won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1, Bhat won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3, and Landin won 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 at No. 4 to give UCO the season opening victory.

Central Oklahoma will make its home debut next week with a matchup against Cowley County (Kan.) before playing the next seven matches on the road.
