Bronchos Rally Past Texas Woman's

EDMOND (Feb. 10) – Carli Jones provided an early spark with a grand slam and then was part of a late-inning surge that put the Central Oklahoma in front as the Bronchos held off Texas Woman's 10-7 Sunday night on the second day of the Raising Cane's Softball Festival.

UCO trailed 4-1 before taking a 5-4 lead on Jones' third-inning blast and the game was tied at 7-all in the sixth when consecutive run-scoring hits by JoBi Heath, Jones and Lexy Dobson finally pushed the Bronchos ahead to stay.

TWU threatened it its final at bat after putting runners on second and third with one out, but Sydney McLeod ended the drama with back-to-back strikeouts.

Central improved to 7-1 with its third straight win.  The Bronchos wrap up the three-day event Monday with games against Southeastern Oklahoma at 12 p.m. and East Central at 2 p.m.

"It wasn't a pretty game by any means, but we found a way to get it done and I like that about this team," head coach Cody White said.  "These girls just keep battling.  We came up with some big hits in key situations."

Halley Randolph went 3-for-3 to lead UCO's 12-hit attack.  Jones had two hits and five RBI, with Hazel Puempel and Dobson also contributing two hits apiece.

TWU scored twice in the top of the first to break on top early, with the Bronchos getting one of those back in their initial offensive try when Puempel led off with a single up the middle and scored on Randolph's one-out double down the left field line.

The Pioneers stretched their lead to 4-1 in the third, but Jones answered back with one swing of the bat in the bottom of that frame.

Three straight walks loaded the bases for the left-handed Jones, who sent the first pitch she saw soaring over the fence in right-center field for her first homer of the season.

TWU came back again in the fifth with three runs – two of those on an error – to grab a 7-5 lead, but Central tied it in its next at bat on an RBI double by Randolph and run-scoring single by Dobson.

Randolph started the game-winning rally in the sixth with a two-out single to right field and then raced around with the go-ahead run on Heath's double to right-center.  Jones plated Heath with a double to left-center and Dobson's single through the right side scored pinch-runner Haley Pomplun to make it 10-7.
