Bronchos Open Season With Run-Rule Victory

EDMOND - Kace Massner launched a two-run home run over the fence in right center to give the University of Central Oklahoma a walk-off 10-0 win over Southeastern Oklahoma State in the first game of the 2019 season for the Bronchos at the Edmond First Pitch Classic at Wendell Simmons Field.

Massner was big Friday, already having a two-RBI triple to kick start a big opening day for the Bronchos. The sophomore from Burlington, Iowa finished the day 2-for-4 with the home run and four runs batted in.

For Central Oklahoma, its starting pitcher Dylan Hall, a junior from Stafford, Va., was just as big.

Having only been on campus for one month, Hall showed no signs of unreadiness. He first away strike after strike in the top of the first inning, striking out the side to give UCO an early boost. Hall wasn't going to let off the gas either. He finished the day after six scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts. He allowed five hits and only two walks on the day.

Central Oklahoma broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two-out rally. Carson Green and Ryan Harrel both drew walks before Massner's big two-RBI triple to left center. Massner would score on the next play when Philip Scott belted a double to right center to make it 3-0 UCO.

The Bronchos made it 8-0 after six innings. Kyle Crowl led off with a ground-rule double and scored on a Taylor Avila RBI single two batters later. Joe Mondragon reached on an error before Avila, and moved to third after Brock Schaffer got hit by a pitch. Green then drew another walk that scored Mondragon before Southeastern made a pitching change.

Harrel then drew another walk himself, which scored Avila, and Scott belted his second double in as many innings to score Green and Schaffer and make it 8-0, UCO.

Harrel drew his third walk of the day in the bottom of the eighth inning and advanced on a wild pitch while Massner stood at the plate. Moments later, Massner ended the game with one swing of the bat.

Central Oklahoma scattered eight hits on the day. Brayden Nelson also threw two innings of clean relief work to follow Hill's win. Nelson didn't allow a hit to the seven batters he faced. He also struck out two.

UCO is back in action Saturday, playing Lubbock Christian at 4 p.m. as the Edmond First Pitch Classic continues throughout the weekend.
