Central Overpowers Northeastern

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball team crushed Northeastern State 84-59 Saturday in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.

Central Oklahoma is now 8-2 on the season and is 2-0 in league play after an opening-weekend sweep of MIAA foes on the road.

"I'm proud of the team for their hard work on defense today," UCO head coach Guy Hardaker said. "We didn't shoot the ball very well today, but we made up for it with good defense. We're creating opportunities and that helps us."

Brooke Rayner led the Bronchos in scoring, pouring in 14 points off the bench. Kelsey Johnson and Clary Donica both had big games and similar stat lines. Both forwards scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

The game was knotted up after one quarter, 14-14. UCO hit 6 of 16 shots from the floor, including one 3-pointer and one free-throw. The game was tied three times in the opening quarter. Shatoya Bryson sank the Bronchos' lone three to make it 5-5, Johnson hit a jump shot to make it 8-8, and then Micayla Haynes hit a shot to tie it up, 14-14.

UCO used a 4-0 run, all from Kaci Richardson, to open the second quarter and built a lead it wouldn't relinquish. Central stretched that to 21-14 while holding Northeastern State scoreless for nearly seven minutes. NSU took a 14-10 lead with 2:26 to play in the first quarter, but the suffocating defense of the Bronchos kept the Riverhawks off the scoreboard until 5:40 to play in the second quarter.

Central led 30-22 after two quarters. The Bronchos shot the ball better in the second quarter, although they didn't make a three, and outscored NSU 16-8. Haynes and Bryson each had six points to lead the Bronchos in scoring. Richardson scored five off the bench, all in the second quarter.

UCO kept up the defensive pace in the third, holding Northeastern State to a dismal 1-for-9 shooting performance. NSU's lone make was a three, and the Riverhawks hit 11 of 14 free-throw attempts. The Bronchos also hit one three, made all seven of its free-throw attempts. Central blew ahead, leading by as many as 22, 49-27, with four minutes to go with the frame.

The Bronchos cruised the fourth quarter, earning their biggest lead of the game, 74-46, with five and a half minutes to play.

Richardson ended the game with nine points, four rebounds, and four assists off the bench. Bryson scored eight, as did Haynes.

The Bronchos finished 32 of 73 shooting, 43.8 percent, and shot 5 of 15 from outside the arc, 33.3 percent. UCO also hit 15 of 18 free-throws.

Central Oklahoma now has two weeks off. The Bronchos don't play again until Dec. 21 when Central visits MIAA newcomer Newman in Wichita, Kan.
