Central Oklahoma Leads Wire-to-Wire At Newman

WICHITA, Kan. – The University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball team led wire-to-wire in a 76-52 win over Newman Saturday afternoon in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play at Fugate Gymnasium.

Central Oklahoma is now 9-2 on the season and 3-0 in league play. The Bronchos are also 3-0 against Newman all-time.

"We played really well today," UCO head coach Guy Hardaker said. "We shot the ball well early and that helped us get the lead. Our defense was also good early. We try to stay aggressive on defense and get more chances and we did that today. It's a good win and it's always good to go into the break on a positive note."

Micayla Haynes led UCO with 17 points, five rebounds, and six assists to go with three steals. She hit three 3-pointers on the afternoon. Kelsey Johnson also scored in double figures, putting up 14 points. She added a team-high six rebounds.

UCO used a hot-shooting first quarter from behind the arc to build an early lead. After Clary Donica knocked down a jumper to put the Bronchos on the board on their first possession. Jaci Littell made it 5-0 with a 3-pointer on the following possession.

UCO held Newman off the scoreboard for 2:22 to open the game. Newman did pull even, 5-5, moments later, however, the Bronchos followed that with three consecutive 3-pointers to take a 14-5 lead. Littell hit her second three of the quarter, Haynes and Shatoya Bryson also added shots from outside to put together the 9-0 run.

Haynes hit another before the quarter's end. And Brooke Rayner added a late three to make UCO 6-for-11 from outside in the first 10 minutes. UCO led 24-13 after one quarter.

Rayner led the second unit down the stretch in the first frame, and continued to do so in the second quarter. A Rayner 3-pointer with 8:08 to play and a layup 25 seconds later gave UCO a 30-15 lead, doubling up the Jets in the early half of the second quarter.

Central had an 11-4 advantage in the second quarter to build a 35-17 lead at the halfway point of the quarter. After the media timeout, Haynes hit another 3-pointer, the eighth of the game for the Bronchos, and put UCO in a comfortable first-half position.

Haynes scored 11 first-half points to lead the Bronchos to a 42-24 lead at the break.

Central Oklahoma stretched its 18-point halftime lead to 23 points after the third quarter. The Bronchos led by as many as 31, 61-32, with 2:42 to play in the quarter. UCO used a second-unit heavy lineup throughout the fourth quarter as it cruised to its third win as many games to open conference play.

UCO took 64 total shots to Newman's 47, a tribute to a smothering defense that forced 23 turnovers. UCO scored 33 points off turnovers Saturday.

Bryson and Rayner both finished with eight points. Littell scored seven as did Kaci Richardson off the bench. Donica, Tayler Factor, Maddie Harelson, all scored four points. Aliyah Llanusa added three.

Central hit 10 3-pointers on the day. Five different players made at least one. Central also had four players with at least five rebounds. Johnson's six led the team. Haynes, Richardson, and Factor all had five.

UCO is now 9-2 overall this season and 3-0 in the MIAA.

The Bronchos are off for the next two weeks. UCO doesn't play again until January 4 against Central Missouri.
