Central Oklahoma Drops MIAA Matchup

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball team lost 59-50 to Central Missouri Saturday afternoon, suffering its first Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association loss of the 2019-20 season.

UCO is now 9-3 overall and 3-1 in league play. It was also the first loss in regulation for the Bronchos.

"We played really well on defense today, but we never capitalized on that," UCO head coach Guy Hardaker said. "We forced a lot of turnovers against a really good team and that's what we do, but if you score off those chances and you let a good team hang around, you can end up getting beat. That's what happened today and we can't let that happen."

Central Oklahoma forced 29 turnovers Saturday afternoon, racking up 14 steals, but only scored 18 points off turnovers. UCO also shot just 32.3 percent from the field, making 21 of 65 shots. The Bronchos hit only 3 of 19 threes and were just 5-for-10 from the free-throw line.

Micayla Haynes led the Bronchos in scoring Saturday, putting up a team-high 15 points on 7 of 19 shooting. Haynes added four rebounds, two steals, and two assists. Shatoya Bryson also scored in double figures, putting up 12 points on 5-for-12 shooting. She hit two of Central's three 3-pointers. Haynes hit the other. Kelsey Johnson also scored 11 points and had a team-high eight rebounds.

UCO held a big early lead Saturday. The Bronchos scored the first 10 points of the game, leading 10-0 at the 3:56 to play in the first quarter. Central Oklahoma forced nine first-quarter turnovers and held UCM to 1-for-13 shooting in the first 10 minutes. UCO led 13-4 at the end of the quarter.

UCM rallied in the second. The Bronchos went up 18-11 when Johnson made a layup at the 6:48 mark in the second quarter and led 21-13 after Bryson hit one of her two shots from outside. But after McKenna Pulley and Haynes scored a pair of buckets with two and half minutes to play, Central Missouri went on a 10-0 run to end the half and tied it up 25-25 with 16 seconds to go.

UCM tied the game early in the third, 27-27, and took its first lead of the afternoon, 35-34, at the 4:59 mark in the third quarter. The teams went back and forth after Central Missouri built a short lead, and UCO tied the game, 40-40 at the end of the three quarters, but the Bronchos never led again.

UCM outscored Central Oklahoma 19-10 in the final quarter, hitting 11 of 14 free-throws in the final period to pull away.

Four other Bronchos added to the point total Saturday. Clary Donica and Pulley each scored four while Jaci Littell and Kaci Richardson each scored two. Central's bench entered the game averaging 34 points per game, but only managed six on Saturday.

UCO is back in action on Monday. The Bronchos host Lincoln at 5:30 p.m. Central Oklahoma will play four games in seven days starting with the UCM matchup. Central Oklahoma visits Missouri Southern on Thursday before visiting Pittsburg State next Saturday.
