Central Oklahoma Blanks Hays In Playoffs

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma soccer team opened the postseason with a 3-0 blanking of Fort Hays State Friday night in the quarterfinals of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Tournament at Tom Thompson Field.

Central Oklahoma advanced in the tournament to the semifinal round. The Bronchos will play top-seeded Central Missouri Friday, Nov. 15 in Warrensburg, Mo.

"We played well tonight," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "That really is the level we need to play at on a consistent level. We got really good play from our midfielders, we got a lot of looks from our forwards, and it's always good to get a shutout. Our defenders and our goalie played well tonight too."

Kelsie Eason struck twice in the first half, scoring on a penalty in the 28th minute and then on a header in the 34th minute. Haley Post added a goal in the 66th minute to finish off the Tigers.

Kaitlyn Asher played all 90 minutes in goal Friday night. The junior earned MIAA Goalkeeper of the Week in each of the final two weeks of the regular season after posting three shutouts in four wins. She added another shutout to her resume Friday night. Asher made three saves.

Fort Hays only managed five total shots on the night. The Tigers put three on target, but Asher corralled each of those attempts.

Eason notched her 16th and 17th goals of the season Friday night and moved up to eighth place on the UCO single season goals scored list.

Also a junior, Eason scored in the 28th minute after Asha Haile was taken down in the box and the Bronchos were awarded a penalty. Eason slotted home the PK with ease in the bottom left corner and made it 1-0, Central.

In the 34th, Taryn Kedzior took a ball up the left side of the box and crossed in a high pass. Eason stood at the back post and headed the ball down and to the left again, passed the Hays goalkeeper and made it 2-0, UCO.

Central missed on a handful of attempts as the Bronchos controlled the game in every facet. The icing on the cake in the win though came in the 66th minute.

Meredith Wilson brought a ball up across midfield. The right back with a big right foot then delivered a dime of a pass 40+ yards inside the box to a charging Post, who volleyed a shot into the back of the net to give the Bronchos a 3-0 lead.

Central Oklahoma avenged an earlier season loss to FHSU, which won 2-1 in Edmond in last month. The Bronchos will look to do the same next Friday night against UCM.
