Central Oklahoma Headed Back To MIAA Championship

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma soccer team is headed back to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Championship match for the second year in a row after the fourth-seeded Bronchos knocked off top-seeded Central Missouri 1-0 Friday night in the semifinals at UCM's South Rec Complex.

Monika McGee headed home a beautiful pass from Taryn Kedzior in the 73rd minute for the game-winning score.

"We played hard and we kept fighting and when you do that, one of those chances are going to go in," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "We had a lot of chances tonight. I'm proud of the team for working hard to get those chances and to keep working when they weren't going in. We never gave up and it's good to get the win."

Central Oklahoma is now 14-4-2 on the season. The fourth-seed in the conference tournament, the Bronchos will face off against second-seeded Northeastern State in the MIAA Championship Sunday at 1 p.m. at UCM.

Moments before the Bronchos got on the scoreboard Friday night, Central Missouri was whistled for a foul about 40 yards out. Kedzior lined up the free kick as her teammates got set. Then the left-footed sophomore from Claremore belted a pass into the UCM box. McGee had arm-length space on either side but took a shot out of the air and cleanly headed home the score.

It's just McGee's second goal of the season. Her first? Last month in Warrensburg when she headed home a goal off a free kick.

Central Oklahoma outshot Central Missouri 25-13 Friday night, putting 11 shots on goal to UCM's seven. McGee took two shots on the night. Kelsie Eason took a game-high eight shots while Haley Post took six. Both of them took three shots on goal. Asha Haile also fired three shots on the night, two on target.

Kaitlyn Asher played all 90 minutes in goal and made seven saves to earn her seventh shutout of the season, her fourth consecutive shutout, and the fifth in six games.

Central Oklahoma will take on Northeastern State for the third time this season. The Bronchos won a non-conference match against NSU 2-1 in Tahlequah, Okla., before winning their MIAA match against NSU 3-1 in Edmond.
