Bronchos Fall To SNU In Double Overtime

EDMOND (Nov. 16) – Poor shooting and a myriad of other mistakes proved too much for Central Oklahoma in an 81-76 double-overtime setback to Southern Nazarene Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos shot just 32.1 percent from the field – including a mere 23.3 percent from 3-point range – and committed 23 turnovers in losing their first game after a 3-0 start.

UCO overcame a six-point deficit in the final 39 seconds of regulation to force overtime and then missed two last-second shots at the end of the first extra session before the Crimson Storm finally pulled out the win in the second OT.

"We just didn't play very well," head coach Guy Hardaker said. "We couldn't make any shots and didn't do much right. We still had plenty of chances to win the game, but couldn't get it done."

Kelsey Johnson was a bright spot for the Bronchos as the 6-foot-3 junior forward scored 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting with a pair of 3-pointers while also pulling down 13 rebounds. Shatoya Bryson also had 15 points.

McKenna Pulley and Jaci Littell added 12 points apiece. Leading scorer Micayla Haynes was limited to five points.

Central led 33-30 at halftime, then managed just seven third-quarter points in falling behind 44-40. The game appeared over when SNU hit a 3-pointer with 41 seconds remaining to go up 58-52, but the Bronchos didn't go quietly.

Haynes knocked down a trey from the top of the key at the 39-second mark to make it 58-55 and Littell answered a SNU free throw with a 15-foot jumper at 0:19 to pull UCO within 59-57.

The Crimson Storm made another free throw at 0:18, but Johnson's layup off a Pulley feed on the fast-break had it down to one and then SNU threw the ball away.

Bryson missed a 3-pointer at 0:04 and Littell was fouled getting the rebound, sending her to the line with 2.4 seconds left. The freshman swished the first foul shot to tie it at 60-all, but the second one rolled off the back of the rim to set up overtime.

Johnson converted a three-point play early in OT to put UCO on top 63-60 before the Crimson Storm reeled off seven straight points to go ahead 67-63 with 2:02 left. Bryson made a layup and two free throws to tie it at 0:37.

Central had two shots at the win in the final five seconds. Bryson missed a 15-footer and Pulley ripped down the rebound, but her 10-foot try at the buzzer was off the mark.

The Bronchos never led in the second extra period as SNU went 12-of-15 from the charity stripe.

UCO continues a four-game homestand next Saturday, hosting Cameron at 1:30 p.m.
