Bronze Tops Blue In Men's Hoops Scrimmage

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball program split its team in half Sunday afternoon for the Bronze & Blue Game – a scrimmage first-year head coach Bob Hoffman hopes to make an annual event – and the Bronze team came out on top of the abbreviated meeting, 53-49.

"I thought we played really well for it being our first live action of the year, but most importantly, I just want to thank the fans who took time out of their Sunday to come and watch us play," Hoffman said after the game. "The guys had a good energy today and I know it that had to do with the fans that showed up and cheered them on. It was great to see and we can't wait for the next opportunity."

UCO played a full, live 20-minute first half before going just under seven minutes in the second half. Hoffman called the teams together at midcourt and thanked the crowd for attending. Then each member of the Broncho basketball program personally thanked 150 or so fans in attendance.

On the court, freshman Jalyn Turner ended the day as the leading scorer. The Houston, Texas native shot 5 of 6 from the floor Sunday – all 3-pointers – and finished with 15 points. Isaiah Wade added 13 points on 6 of 7 shooting , six rebounds and a block, and Seth Hurd had 10 points and four rebounds.

That trio sparked a dominant first half for the Blue team, which led by as many as 17 points with 5:48 remaining in the first 20 minutes.

But it was the Bronze team that prevailed in the end.

A 16-4 run to open the second half did the trick. Camryn Givens led the way with 13 points and three rebounds. He was 5-for-8 from the floor on the day. Cooper Clark added 10 points on a perfect 3-for-3 day from the field. He was 2-for-2 from behind the arc and also 2-for-2 from the charity stripe.

Colt Savage added nine points and five boards. Dashawn McDowell had eight to go with seven assists and six rebounds. Shemar Smith added seven points. and D.J. Basey chipped in with six points.

Justin Nimmer also added seven points for the Blue team while Carson Calavan had four. Calavan's eight first-half assists was a game high.

The Bronze team finished the afternoon 17 of 35 from the floor, 4-for-10 from behind the arc, and 15-for-20 from the free-throw line. The Blue team was 21 of 39 overall, 6 of 13 from three, and just 1-for-3 from the line. Both teams rebounded well and evenly, with Bronze taking a 20-19 edge.

Central Oklahoma opens the 2019-20 regular season Nov. 8 in Alva, Okla. The Bronchos will play their first home game of the new season Nov. 20 against Midwestern State. Tickets are on sale now.
