UCO Falls Short Against No. 2 Bearcats

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team fell to Northwest Missouri on Saturday afternoon, 78-67, in a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association matchup at Hamilton Field House. The Bronchos move to 7-6 on the season and are now 0-4 league play.

"Northwest Missouri is a good team." UCO head coach Tom Hankins said. "I'm proud of our guys for battling and not giving up when we could have. We kept fighting and I know that's going to pay off for us soon."

The Bronchos won the tip to start off the game and led to a 2-0 start off of a jumper from Adarius Avery. The Bearcats went down, missed a three, which resulted in UCO taking it down for another jumper good from Jordan Hemphill. This was the only lead the Bronchos would have in the first half.

NWMSU continued to get it to their big guys in the paint, and knock down 3-pointers when the Bronchos collapsed into the lane, as well as causing UCO turnovers on the other end.

Northwest led by as many as nine points in the first half. Central wittled the lead to four with eight minutes left, and then got to withing a point with just under three minutes left before NWMSU ended the half up 31-27.

The Bearcats came out of the locker room knocking down shots on almost every possession in the second half. The Bronchos continued to battle and chip the lead, but NWMSU answered. UCO had 15 turnovers, which led to 16 of the Bearcats points off of those.

The Bearcats came down the court with two minutes to play, missing a three-pointer, which UCO got the rebound and went back down to knock down a big three-point field goal by Jaylan Williams to chip NWMSU's lead to just seven, 72-65 with just two minutes to go. But UCO couldn't get any closer to the Bearcats than that.

Ashford Golden led the Bronchos with 21 points. Avery had 15 points and 10 rebounds. He led the team in assists, with seven, nearing a triple-double. Williams added eight points, and Marquis Johnson added seven.  UCO shot 48 percent from the field and 29 percent from the three-point line.

The Bronchos are on the road for the next two games. They will face Nebraska Kearney on Thursday, Jan. 10 at 7:30 p.m. and then Fort Hays State on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 3:30 p.m.
