Bronchos Edge Bearcats

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team defeated Southwest Baptist 68-62 on Thursday evening in Hamilton Field House.

"I'm extremely proud of our the guys." UCO head coach Tom Hankins said. "We slowed down the basketball on the offensive end and looked for good shots. Our defense continued to force turnovers and I can't say enough about how they played."

UCO moves to 9-11 overall and 2-9 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.

Adarius Avery led the Bronchos wih another double-double. The senior added 19 points and 10 rebounds. Jordan Hemphill had 14 points and seven rebounds. Josh Holliday added 11 points and two steals. Dashon Bell had 10 points and five rebounds.

UCO shot 38.5 percent from the field and 34.8 percent from 3-point range. The Bronchos continue to knock down shots from the line, going 10-for-11 from the charity stripe. The Bronchos crashed the boards well and got 16 points second chance points. UCO's defense forced 14 Bearcat turnovers.

The first half started out with the Bearcats knocking down a three, but the Bronchos would answer on their end with a three from Hemphill. It went back and forth until Holliday knocked down a three of his own to make it 6-6 only two minutes in. Johnson added a three-pointer to give the Bronchos the lead. The Bearcats wouldn't lead again the rest of the half.

The Bronchos led by as many as 15 in the first, after Hemphill got it in the paint for a layup to make the score 29-14. The UCO defense forced seven turnovers which resulted in seven fast break points.

UCO came out of halftime and knocked down shots extending the eight-point lead to 11. The Bearcats wouldn't go out lightly though. With about six minutes left in the matchup, SBU knocked down a three-point field goal to take their first lead of the game since the beginning and make it 56-55.

Both of the teams continued to battle, trying to get the ball in the paint. The game was over when Avery took it inside to score a big layup and draw the foul, knocking down the free-throw. This lead would force the Bearcats to foul the Bronchos trying to get the ball back, but it just wasn't enough, and UCO took home the win.

The Bronchos are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 3:30 p.m. against Central Missouri in Hamilton Field House. They will be back on the road for the next one against Northeastern State on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 3:30 p.m.
