UCO Outlasts Lincoln

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball team beat Lincoln 68-56 Saturday afternoon in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play at Jason Gym.

The Bronchos improved to 13-7 overall on the season and are now 4-6 in league play.

"We didn't start the game very well, but we made some adjustments and got things figured out," UCO head women's basketball coach Guy Hardaker said. "We played really well for three quarters and fortunately for us today that was enough. It's good to get a win and it's good to get a road win."

UCO's first quarter wasn't its best quarter, but it did start the game on a good note. Shatoya Bryson stole a ball from Lincoln and got a layup to make it 2-0 just a minute into the game. On the next possession, Bryson fed Ireon Smith for a layup to make it 4-0. Lincoln would score the next five points before two McKenna Pulley free-throws gave the Bronchos a 6-5 lead, but then Lincoln made a run again, leading 10-6 moments later. A late 3-pointer from Lincoln ended the quarter with the Blue Tigers ahead 14-10 over UCO.

But the Bronchos responded in a big way in the second quarter.

After a 4-0 start to the quarter for Lincoln made it 18-10, the Bronchos turned up the pressure on defense, and used a 10-for-10 performance from the free-throw line in the second quarter to build a comfortable lead.

A five-point swing helped. Micayla Haynes knocked down a pair of free-throws after a Lincoln technical foul was issued, and then hit a 3-pointer to give a boost to the Bronchos. Haynes made another bucket to cut the lead to 18-17 before a Blake Blessington 3-pointer gave the Bronchos a 20-18 lead.

The Bronchos would outscore Lincoln 14-6 after that, building a 32-24 halftime lead.

UCO used a 14-10 advantage in the third quarter to build its lead to 16 points. It would lead by as many as 17 in the fourth quarter.

The Bronchos shot the ball better in the fourth quarter than any other quarter (47 percent). UCO cruised to a win part in thanks to continuing to find ways to draw fouls. Lincoln only played seven players Saturday and Kaloni Pryear fouled out in the third quarter. Zoi Thompson fouled out with 6:50 to go in the fourth, and then Bre Coleman fouled out with 5:10 to play in the game and forced the Blue Tigers to play the rest of the game with just four players.

Smith led UCO with 18 points Saturday. She was 6-for-8 from the floor and also 6-for-6 from the free-throw line while also grabbing seven rebounds.

Megan Hartness, who had 17 points off the bench, was also 6-for-8 from the floor Saturday and was 3-for-4 from behind the arc. Hartness added a pair of free-throws, five rebounds, one block and one steal.

Blessington was the only other Broncho in double figures. She had 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Haynes finished with seven points - all in one stretch of the second quarter - Bryson had six points, and Madison Lee added four to round out the starting five scoring. Lauren Chancellor (three) and Pulley (two) added with Hartness' 17 for UCO's bench scoring on the afternoon.

Central Oklahoma now returns home for a pair of MIAA games. The Bronchos host Southwest Baptist on Thursday, Jan. 31 at 5:30 p.m. before hosting defending NCAA Division II national champion Central Missouri on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 1:30 p.m.
