UCO Bounces Bearcats

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball team beat Southwest Baptist 83-65 Thursday evening at Hamilton Field House in a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association game.

Central Oklahoma improved to 14-7 with the win and is now 5-6 in league play. SBU is 6-13 overall and 2-8 in the MIAA.

"We played well tonight," UCO head women's coach Guy Hardaker said. "We came out really well and we shot the ball well. We got a great effort from our bench too. Tonight was a good performance for the most part. We turned the ball over too many times, but we did a good job making up for that."

UCO shot 48.5 percent from the floor overall and hit 9 of 20 threes, a 45 percent mark. That to go with a 10-for-11 performance from the free-throw line.

The Bronchos got four double-digit scorers Thursday, led by Megan Hartness' 18-point game off the bench. Blake Blessington and Shatoya Bryson both scored 13 points and Ireon Smith added 10.

Central Oklahoma led for most of the game Thursday. UCO was up 2-0 after just 15 seconds thanks to a Smith layup off her own offensive rebound. Then SBU worked itself to a 4-2 lead. But the Bronchos tied it with a Bryson layup and took the lead on her ensuing free-throw. Central didn't trail again.

Hartness hit a 3-pointer in the final minute of the opening quarter to give the Bronchos a 12-point lead, 21-9. And the first quarter was a sign of things to come.

UCO maintained a double-digit lead for most of the second quarter, leading by as many as 16 points, 42-26 after a Smith layup with two minutes to play, and again by that same margin, 45-29, when Blessington hit a 3-pointer with 1:27 to play. That's how the Bronchos went to halftime.

Central increased its lead to a game-high 26 points, 66-40, when Hartness knocked down another 3-pointer with three minutes to play in the third quarter. UCO led 68-45 after three.

Southwest Baptist made its biggest run in the beginning of the fourth quarter. The Bearcats scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to make it 68-55 before Madison Lee ended the run with a 3-pointer. And that gave the Bronchos all they needed to finish it off.

Lee gave the Bronchos a 20-point lead, 80-60, after a fast-break layup started by a Blessington block on the other end. UCO led by 20 again when Kaci Richardson put in a layup with 2:31 to play. That made it 82-62. Richardson sank a free-throw following SBU's final basket to make it the final, 83-65.

Richardson scored nine points off the bench, and added nine rebounds, two assists and a block. Micayla Haynes scored eight points to go with two assists and Lee had seven points to go with a team-high five assists. Brooke Rayner (three) and McKenna Pulley (two) added to the 32 points scored by the Broncho bench Thursday.

Central Oklahoma is back in action at Hamilton Field House Saturday when the Bronchos take on defending NCAA Division II national champion Central Missouri at 1:30 p.m.
