UCO Falls At Lindenwood

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - The University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball team dropped a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association road contest Thursday night, falling 81-64 to Lindenwood at Hyland Arena.

"We didn't come out ready to play tonight and Lindenwood did," UCO head coach Guy Hardaker said. "Lindenwood is a really good team this season and playing at their place, you just can't afford to come out the way we did."

UCO got off to a slow start and couln't recover. The Bronchos were down 7-0 before an Ireon Smtih layup put UCO on the board. Smith fed Shatoya Bryson for a 3-pointer to make it 7-5, but by the time UCO scored its next basket, a Micayla Haynes layup, the Bronchos were down 14-7. Central Oklahoma trailed 23-11 after the first quarter, when Lindenwood shot a nice 10-for-17 from the floor.

The Bronchos played better in the second quarter, upping their field goal percentage from 31 percent in the first quarter, to 47 percent in the second quarter. UCO outscored Lindenwood 18-15 in the frame to cut into the deficit, and trailed 38-29 at the halftime break.

But the third quarter resembled the first. Lindenwood hit nearly 70 percent of its shots, 8-for-12, and knocked down four 3-pointers in the quarter. The Lions led by as many as 20, 62-42, at the end of the quarter. That wouldn't be the biggest lead of the game either.

Lindenwood stretched that lead to 27 in the fourth quarter, pulling away for the win.

Haynes and Bryson led the Bronchos Thursday, both scoring a team-high 13 points. Bryson knocked down two of UCO four 3-pointers on the night. Smith added 10 points and seven rebounds, and backup post player Kaci Richardson also scored 10 points and grabbed three rebounds.

Megan Hartness scored seven, Blake Blessington, Lauren Chancellor and Brooke Rayner all scored three points while Madison Lee scored two.

Central Oklahoma is now 12-7 on the season and 3-6 in MIAA play. The Bronchos are back on the court this weekend, continuing a Missouri road trip in Jefferson City against Lincoln. Tipoff Saturday is scheduled for 1 p.m.
