UCO Lights Up Lions In Edmond

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak in style Saturday afternoon with an 88-60 win over Missouri Southern in a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association game at Hamilton Field House.

Four Bronchos scored in double figures Saturday afternoon, including three starters. Micayla Haynes led the way with a game-high 17 points. The junior guard was 6-for-12 from the floor and knocked down five 3-pointers. Blake Blessington scored 16 points, hitting four 3-pointers, and Madison Lee and Megan Hartness both scored 10 points.

"We came out ready to play today and I we were really dialed in at the beginning," UCO head women's basketball coach Guy Hardaker said. "And we made a bunch of threes today. That always helps. I'm proud of the team for playing hard today. I think everyone played well, all 10 of our girls played well."

All 10 players for Central Oklahoma scored Saturday. The Bronchos shot 49.3 percent from the floor overall and 40.5 percent from behind the arc. Central hit a season-high 15 3-pointers on 37 attempts, which is also a season-high.

UCO jumped out to an early lead thanks to an 8-0 run to start the game. Lee hit a 3-pointer on the Bronchos' first possession of the game. She knocked down a jumper a minute later, then Haynes knocked down a three to make it 8-0 just two and a half minutes into the game.

The Bronchos led by as many as 13 points when Blessington knocked down a three to make it 20-7 with 4:07 to play in the opening quarter. The lead grew to 14 when Brooke Rayner laid in a nice fastbreak layup to make it 26-12 with 35 seconds left.

UCO opened the second quarter in the same fashion. After Missouri Southern opened the quarter with a layup, Central Oklahoma went on a 9-0 run. Hartness had a layup to start it, and hit a free-throw 30 seconds later. Then she knocked down a three 30 seconds after that, and Lauren Chancellor made it a 21-point lead for the Bronchos when she hit a three to make it 35-14 UCO with 7:41 to play in the second quarter.

The Bronchos led by 21 again after Lee made a layup with just one second left on the clock in the half. That made it 46-25 UCO at halftime.

Missouri Southern outscored Central Oklahoma 22-15 in the third quarter to keep the game somewhat close. But a 9-0 run to begin the fourth quarter sealed the deal. The Bronchos knocked down 10 of 19 shots in the fourth quarter – they did the same in the first quarter – and added five free-throws in the final 10 minutes to seal the victory.

Central Oklahoma is now 12-6 on the season and 3-5 in league play. The Bronchos will travel next week, playing at Lindenwood on Thursday and at Lincoln next Saturday. UCO will play at home in two weeks, hosting Southwest Baptist on Jan. 31 and Central Missouri on Feb. 2
