UCO Opens MIAA Play With 8-1 Road Win

BOLIVAR, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma soccer team moved to 8-0 on the season, after defeating Southwest Baptist University Sunday afternoon 8-1. The Broncho win also makes UCO 1-0 in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play.

"That's a good way to start conference play," UCO head coach Mike Cook said. "When you're able to get a win like that, it helps build confidence. We played well in a lot of different places today and it should help us going forward."

Central entered Sunday's match unbeaten and had only allowed one goal in its first seven contests of 2018. That came against Southwest Baptist in  a non-conference matchup in Edmond two weeks ago. SBU Sunday got the first goal and its only one on the day in the seventh minute off of a header by Maya Cofield.

Just the second goal of the season scored against the Bronchos, it was the first goal allowed by freshman keeper Kelsi Gibson, who had six shutouts to her career in six career games entering Sunday. Her record-setting clean sheet mark ended at 547 minutes.

The Bronchos were quick to respond. They then went on an 8-0 run starting with a goal at 9:29 by Madison Motil, assisted by Katie Killion. A few minutes after that, Killion got a goal of her own that was unassisted.

Haley Post got her first goal of the season at 13:48, assisted by Kelsie Eason. Motil then got her second goal of the game, again assisted by Killion at 16:27. The roles switched again, with Killion scoring at 21:36, assisted by Motil.

Killion scored a hat trick against SBU earlier this month and would end the day with five goals scored against the Bearcats on the season.

Eason also got in on the goal-scoring festivities, racking up a goal at 32:28, assisted by Piper Cannon. Katie Gasaway then scored her first goal on the season at 40:24, also assisted by Cannon. Katy Tullis scored the final goal of the day for the Bronchos, at 77:38, assisted by Gasaway.

UCO outshot Southwest Baptist 33-3 on the day. Gibson allowed a goal on the only shot she faced in the first half. Ally Salls played the second half and SBU got two more shots off, but neither were on target. UCO landed 19 shots on goal Sunday.

The Bronchos are back in action on Friday, Sep. 28 at 6 p.m. in Hays, Kansas against Fort Hays State. Central will wrap up a five-match road swing at Nebraska-Kearney next Sunday.
