Bronchos Throttle Bearcats

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma soccer team took down Southwest Baptist 6-1 on Friday night on Tom Thompson Field moving their record to 5-0 on the season. The non-conference match between MIAA foes was the first night game ever played in 21 years on Thompson Field.

"We tried to attack early and often," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "I thought we should have score more goals honestly. We had more chances. We created a lot of chances and that's good for the offense."

The first goal came from a rebound from the left side of the box at 10:49 by Katie Killion. Not long after that, at 14:39, Camrie Hurst assisted a goal to Killion again from a 2-on-1 in front of the net.

Killion would soon get her second career hat trick Friday night. She scored three goals to move up to sixth place – tied with Katy Kashwer and Lindsay Hull – in school history for most career goals scored (29).

"Katie is such a hard-worker," Cook said. "She is so fast and gives a great effort and that's why she's been able to score so much. And of course, she's talented too. I'm glad for her. But she also needs to keep working. This season is still very early."

The third goal of the night came from Morgan Cherry at 47:38 off of a rebound from 10 yards out. Asha Haile then dribbled across the middle of the box for an unassisted goal at 50:48.

Killion scored her third goal on the night from a shot from six yards out on the left side of the box, assisted by Taryn Kedzior. The final goal was scored at 72:12 from another 2-on-1 from the right side of the box by Hurst, assisted by Cherry.

Central allowed a goal for the first time this season in the 56th minute. It came off a set piece. The Bronchos tied a school record though, shutting out each of their first four opponents to start the season. It was the first time that happened since 2002. The school record for consecutive shutouts is six, set numerous times.

The Bronchos are back in action on the road on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Northeastern State in Tahlequah, Okla. The Northeastern State Riverhawks are also 5-0 on the season.

Junior Mariah Nicolet is leading their team in goals (four) and shots (13). Sophomore Paulina Chaves and Junior Paige Lorenzo have two goals each.
