UCO Blanks Northeastern To Stay Unbeaten

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The University of Central Oklahoma soccer team is now 6-0 in 2018 after defeating Northeastern State 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.

There was no score for most of the game until 73:41 when senior Morgan Cherry scored the only goal. It was the second goal of the season for Cherry, and it looked identical to the first one, scored in a win over Southwestern Oklahoma State two weeks ago.

Kelsie Eason earned the assist on the play. After Madison Motil drew a corner for the Bronchos in the 74th minute, Eason lined up and sent in the pass. Cherry was the first on the scene and headed in the goal off a Northeastern State defender's foot to put the Bronchos up 1-0.

The Bronchos gave the Riverhawks their first loss on the season.

"We showed good fight today," UCO head soccer coach Mike Cook said. "This was a really tough match, probably our toughest test yet. But the team did a great job staying focused and fought really hard. This is another good win for the team to see what they are capable of."

UCO outshot NSU 25-3. Katie Killion had eight shots and Camille Greer, Haley Post, and Eason had four each.

Freshman goalkeeper Kelsi Gibson played the entire 90 minutes and added another shutout to her young career, making it to five in five games played. She had three saves on three shots for the day.

Sunday's game was a non-conference game for the Bronchos and the rival-Riverhawks. The teams meet again in Edmond next month in MIAA competition.

The Bronchos are back in action on Friday, Sep. 21 at 7 p.m. in Joplin, Mo. against Missouri Southern. That game will be the final non-con for the Bronchos this season. Central visits Southwest Baptist next Sunday to open MIAA play for the 2018 season.
