Bronchos Open Season With Shutout

OKLAHOMA CITY (Aug. 30) – Katie Killion and Piper Cannon scored first-half goals, Central Oklahoma played suffocating defense from start to finish and the Bronchos breezed past Oklahoma Christian 2-0 Thursday night at Eagle Field.

UCO dominated from the outset and outshot OC 22-3 in finishing off the season-opening win that wasn't nearly as close as the final score.  The Bronchos make their home debut Sunday, hosting 17th-ranked Southwestern Oklahoma at 1 p.m.

"It was a good start for us," said 21st-year head coach Mike Cook, who improved to 14-5-2 in season-openers at UCO.  "We had lots of chances to score that we didn't take advantage of, but our passing was good and I really liked how we played defensively.

"We got a lot of players on the field, which was good, and obviously we saw things we can work on and correct.  We have a big test coming up Sunday and we're looking forward to the challenge."

Twenty-two players saw action for the Bronchos, who spent most of the game on OC's side of the field.

Central had several prime scoring opportunities early before finally breaking through with 26:20 left in the opening half when Killion took a nice feed from Taryn Kedzior and tapped a shot in from five yards out.

It was the 24th career goal for the senior standout and was the only score UCO's defense needed on a steamy day in which goalkeeper Kelsi Gibson saw only one shot towards the net.

Cannon made it 2-0 in the 35th minute when the junior tallied the first score of her collegiate score, getting a cross from Kaylee Collins and ripping a shot into the net from the middle of the field 15 yards away.

Twelve difference players took shots for the Bronchos, who had a 13-1 shot advantage in the first half and 9-2 edge in the second.
